Voices from the Field: James White on Health System Resilience

James White
HIV/AIDS and Clinical Advisor

In this video James White, a clinical advisor on SHOPS Plus, talks about health system resilience and how it takes a whole community to adequately prepare for, respond to, and recover from a shock. He co-authored the new report, Engaging the Private Sector in Health System Resilience Efforts: A Strategic Approach.

A shock to the health system, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, tests the system’s resiliency. The effects of such a shock can be exacerbated when the system is already dealing with daily stressors such as personnel shortages, stockouts, and financial barriers to care. Just as countries must engage the private sector to achieve health goals, they must also engage with the sector to minimize the effects of stressors and shocks.
